Sharp Vision Underwater: Demonstrating Light Refraction in the Eye

In an article under review (link to the article tba) we demonstrate the principles of light refraction in the eye underwater using a 3D-printed experimental model simulating the function of swimming goggles. As part of the physiology practical course at the University of Augsburg’s medical program, students explore eye optics using a kit that models image formation and accommodation. The newly developed 3D-printed model illustrates how the eye’s refractive power decreases underwater due to changes in the refractive index. Swimming goggles restore normal refraction by maintaining an air interface, allowing clear vision. The model requires a 3D printer, rubber sheets, microscope slides, and adhesive for assembly. All necessary files for 3D printing and detailed instructions can be downloaded here.
