Praise for Augsburg’s bachelor’s degree programmes by CHE Ranking
The CHE University Ranking for 2024 has been published. Apply to the University of Augsburg by the 15th of July for the winter semester.
The University of Augsburg is delighted to have received the highest rating for five of its bachelor’s degree programmes in the CHE University Ranking 2024. The five degree programmes to receive a top rating were geography, computer science, mathematics, physics, and social sciences, with the general study conditions and supervision by teaching staff highly commended. Conducted by the Centre for Higher Education (CHE), the ranking provides a nationwide comparison of degree programmes and study conditions. It was published in May. Applications to the University of Augsburg for the winter semester 2024/25 are possible until the 15th of July. Geography provides valuable knowledge about the sustainable development of our earth system and its ecosystems, habitats, and regions. It focuses on the diverse challenges and opportunities that life on Earth offers and on the question of how humans influence the environment and vice versa. Internships, field exercises, as well as laboratory work combine to create a highly practical component in the bachelor’s degree programme. The range of courses offered in geography led to its being in the top group in the CHE Ranking. Students surveyed and the statisticians who evaluated the results rated the categories “support at the start of studies,” “introduction to scientific work” and “support when studying abroad” very highly. The bachelor’s degree programme teaches the basics of computer science. It has a highly practical component as a result of projects and internships with external companies, which provide optimal conditions for career orientation. At the same time, students can choose from a wide range of minor subjects that specialise in various areas of application in computer science. Popular career paths include programming, software engineering, system analysis, and process automation. The categories “range of courses” and “study and exam organisation” received a very good rating in the CHE Ranking. Augsburg’s bachelor’s degree programme in computer science also landed in the top group in terms of student support, supervision by teaching staff, and facilities (e.g., rooms, information technology, library). At the University of Augsburg, mathematics is taught as an interdisciplinary degree programme that combines with a minor subject in either physics, computer science, economics, geography, or philosophy. Graduates work in banking and insurance, in the IT industry, consulting, as well as in other areas of application such as data science or artificial intelligence. The bachelor’s degree programme in mathematics was placed in the top group in the categories of “range of courses,” “supervision of students,” and the “organisation of studies.” The facilities in Augsburg, student support, and support for those wishing to study abroad were also highly rated. Students who study physics want to understand the fundamentals of natural processes and technology in order to design future technologies. At the Institute of Physics at the University of Augsburg, students can work on the fundamentals as well as in application-orientated research projects that are strongly connected with the regional economy. Good career prospects attract graduates. The CHE Ranking praised the overall study situation and the supervision by teaching staff in physics, as well as the student support provided by the university and teaching staff. It also emphasised how well students were introduced to scientific work. The bachelor’s degree programme in social sciences combines theory and practice in the disciplines of political science and sociology. As an application-orientated, interdisciplinary degree programme, it offers broad-based knowledge about society and politics. It prepares students for career paths in which extensive knowledge of living conditions and transformation processes in contemporary society and their political organisation is expected. Students who participated in the CHE survey rated student support very positively, as well as the introduction to scientific work. Here, students are taught about scientific methods and are encouraged to critically reflect on them. The social sciences were also highly rated in the category of “doctorates per professor,” landing it in the top group. The CHE Ranking results can be found here:

About the CHE Ranking
The CHE Ranking evaluates the studying conditions of individual disciplines at over 400 universities in Germany. The basis for the ranking is a detailed student survey. For this year’s ranking, over 120,000 students were surveyed. The ranking also includes facts about study programmes, teaching, and research. Each discipline is evaluated every three years.
