Just finished school and about to start uni? For many young people, October marks the start of a new phase in their lives. They will start specialising in a particular area of study, need to be self-organised, and be able to make use of all the opportunities that a degree programme opens up, which also lays the foundations for a future career. “An academic qualification is a requirement for quite a few professions. Students need to be capable of abstract, analytical thinking, have perseverance, good self-organisation, a willingness to perform, and motivation,” explains Dr Thomas Bodenmüller, Head of the Student Advice and Counselling Service. The University of Augsburg offers students innovative degree programmes and optimal studying conditions: students have access to modern labs, which they can use for their own research. The compact park-like campus provides an environment in which it is easy to meet other people and which includes space for relaxation around the uni lake as well as sporting facilities in direct proximity to the campus. A compact campus with a pleasant atmosphere is inviting for all prospective students.

Choosing a degree programme and subjects

“To find the right degree programme, first reflect on your own preferences, strengths, talents, visions and wishes. Based on this, find out what you enjoy and what topics are important to you. Leave the systematics of school-based subjects behind and think more broadly,” explains Bodenmüller. For example, various degree programmes, ranging from geography and geo-informatics to economics, materials science and engineering and the master’s degree environmental ethics, deal with climate change and its consequences.

Augsburg: a university town

As the third largest town in Bavaria, Augsburg has an ideal mixture of big city flair and cosy charm. With a large variety of cafes, beer gardens, restaurants and shops, the old town invites you to linger. At the same time, recreational areas such as the Siebentischwald forest as well as many lakes suitable for swimming are located just a stone’s throw away, offering an ideal change from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. The history of the Fuggerstadt goes back over 2000 years, so there are a lot of historical landmarks to see and stories to tell, from the Ancient Romans, the Fuggers, and the textile industry to Leopold Mozart and Bertolt Brecht.
