Information on courses for exchange students

Students at the Institute of Computer Science have access to a wide range of courses. A complete overview of all available courses can be found in the module handbook.

The wide range of courses may seem overwhelming at first, but don’t worry – below you will find a brief explanation of the module handbook to help guide you.

  • If you are unsure whether the course you have chosen is listed in the module handbook, please contact the respective lecturer or send us an email at welcome@informatik.uni-augsburg.de
  • If you are studying at the Bachelor's level, you also have the option to choose courses from the Master's level in the module handbook. This is possible because many Master's courses are offered in English. If you are unsure whether you meet the prerequisites, please contact the respective lecturer
  • For a realistic workload, it is advisable to choose one seminar and one project module and to attend lectures from the elective area.
  • Once you have decided on a course, feel free to reach out to the lecturer in advance to ensure that the course will be taught in English.
The lectures will provide you with information in the field of computer science. A lecturer will present a specific topic to you and other students. Lectures are designed to impart knowledge and are mostly theoretical in nature. As a student, you have the opportunity to listen, take notes and ask questions or take part in discussions.

Seminars are events in which students explore a specific topic in depth. At the beginning, there is a kick-off meeting with the seminar supervisors, where the available topics for the seminar papers are presented. You then choose your own topic and discuss it with your supervisor. The exact requirements may vary depending on the seminar. At the end of the semester, you will write your own seminar paper on the chosen topic.

In research and project modules, students often work directly with staff on current research projects. At the beginning of the module, the specific research or project topic is defined in consultation with the supervisor. To find a suitable topic, students need to independently contact a department that works on a research area of interest to them. We are happy to assist you with this process (welcome@informatik.uni-augsburg.de).

My exchange year at the University of Augsburg has been a unique experience. After six semesters as a Bachelor student in Computer Information Systems at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil, I decided that in Augsburg, I would mostly focus on natural language processing. There were plenty of opportunities for me to get in touch and collaborate with fellow students and professors. I even got to work as a tutor! I'm sure to go back home with a broader worldview and academic experience.

This semester as an exchange student taught me a lot about other people and especially about myself. I had the opportunity to study with personnel who are experts in their area while also travelling around Germany and its big cities. I would not ever regret doing this semester in Augsburg as it is truly a charming place filled with nature. Sadly everything must end,  but I will always cherish the lessons and experiences at the University of Augsburg.
