In many subjects, the amount of work involved in correcting pupils' work is enormous. At the same time, pupils are dependent on well-founded feedback in the learning process. Since the 2024/2025 school year, the Stiftung Bildungspakt Bayern has been conducting the school trial “proof - Process organization and feedback in performance assessment”. The school trial aims to show how digital tools - in particular AI-supported applications - can help to design performance assessments and determine student performance. This involves both new formats for performance assessments and a more efficient evaluation of results. Prof. Dr. Petra Kirchhoff, holder of the Chair of English Didactics at the University of Augsburg, was appointed to the scientific advisory board of the school trial in February. “Many teachers have reservations about AI, some of which are justified. I therefore see the school trial as an opportunity to bring the topic into schools with a constructive and sensible idea,” says Kirchhoff.

The aim of the school trial is to adapt performance assessment formats in Bavaria to modern technological possibilities and new challenges. One of the aims is to reduce the burden on teachers, for example by pre-correcting pupils' work. At the same time, pupils are to receive targeted and personalized feedback and support through data-supported analysis. “It is obvious that AI can bring great benefits here - for pupils, but also for teachers in these challenging times,” emphasizes Kirchhoff. The school trial also focuses on the question of how reliable the result of the AI-supported application is in individual cases and how the data collected can be protected.
