12 Research Assistants / Doctoral Candidates, Centre for Climate Resilience (CCR)

The Centre for Climate Resilience (CCR) at the University of Augsburg is seeking to fill the following positions by the 1st of November 2024 as part of the “Green Research Network BRaVE”:

12 Research Assistants / Doctoral Candidates

The positions are part-time (50%) and run for a fixed period of three years. If the prerequisites are met, the salary will be according to the TV-L 13 pay grade. The positions are funded by the University of Augsburg’s “Green Transformation” programme and will be coordinated by the research units listed below.

The CCR was founded in 2020 to coordinate and unite all the resources and activities on climate resilience research, knowledge and action at the University of Augsburg. Based on interdisciplinary research, the CCR aims to develop holistic and feasible strategies for adapting to climate change. Alongside the CCR, other researchers from the University of Augsburg, particularly researchers at the Environmental Science Center (WZU) and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Health Research (CIHR), are involved as tandem partners in supervising BRaVE doctoral candidates.

The aim of the 'Green Research Network BRaVE: Identification of Vulnerabilities, Indicators, and Implications for Actions' is to develop interdisciplinary methods that will have a significant impact on society. These methods will identify climate-related vulnerabilities and derive quantitative or qualitative indicators for the early identification of risks. They will be used to develop sustainable solutions to mitigate these risks. The vulnerabilities addressed cover the range of disciplines represented at the CCR, in particular geoscientific, (resource) economic, logistical, medical, social, political and legal risks.

The research topics associated with the individual positions are as follows:

  1. WaterRes: Development of indicators for the resilience of the water supply and quantification through earth system models (Prof. Dr. Harald Kunstmann)
  2. Stabilising natural and managed land systems against climate disturbances and extreme events – DETECT (Prof. Dr. Katharina Waha)
  3. Building resilience in critical zones: Steep-slope agriculture under changing environmental conditions in the Rwenzori, Uganda – ResCUE (Prof. Dr. Markus Keck)
  4. Raw material demands for a climate resilient future (Dr. Andrea Thorenz)
  5. Risks of the green transformation with respect to forest and climate protection – a qualitative study of transnational negotiations of the CO2 market in the Amazonian basin (Prof. Dr. Maria Backhouse)
  6. Planned relocation and early warning in the Caribbean: Discourses and practices of “vulnerability” from the perspective of a Decolonial Political Ecology (Prof. Dr. Angela Oels)
  7. Operationalizing early warning systems for decision support in water management (Prof. Dr. Florian Diekert)
  8. Resilient logistics and inventory management in the face of climate change (Prof. Dr. Manuel Ostermeier)
  9. Can biodiversity metrics serve as useful early warning indicators of financial and economic risks? Implications for corporate ecological and financial resilience (Prof. Dr. Sebastian Utz)
  10. “Climate check” for all draft legislation – methods of a climate-related regulatory impact assessment. (Prof. Dr. Sina Fontana)
  11. Optimization and validation of an innovative early warning system for pollen, air pollutants, and complex environmental factors to enhance climate resilience for allergy sufferers (Prof. Dr. Claudia Traidl-Hoffmann)
  12. STOP-MBDs: Short-term operational projections for mosquito-borne disease control (Prof. Dr. Elke Hertig)
