Research Software Engineer (m/f/d)
 

in a fixed-term employment until June 2026.The position is part-time, with up to half of the regular working hours, depending on the candidate’s availability. The salary is determined based on prior experience and on the fulfilment of requirements according to the German public sector pay scale up to E13 TV-L. Further academic qualification is possible.

The Centre for Climate Resilience at the University of Augsburg was founded at the end of 2020. The research centre is dedicated to research and science communication in the field of climate resilience with an interdisciplinary approach. The aim is to develop scientific foundations and holistic and implementable strategies at regional, national and international level that demonstrate adaptations to the unavoidable consequences of climate change.

Your tasks:

We are looking for a part-time research software engineer interested in scientific computing and research on global vegetation, climate risk and sustainability modelling using the LPJmL model.

Tasks:

  • Write, debug and compile C code written for the global dynamic vegetation model LPJmL (source code partly open under an AGPLv3 license), including profiling and optimization of existing code.
  • Contribute to model description and technical papers and technical documentation, published for example in a Geoscientific Model Development special issue
  • Coaching and mentoring of research and technical staff and students.
  • Planning and conducting software engineering, programming, scientific computing or modelling courses amounting to 1 to 2 ½ semester hours per week (depending on regular working hours).

Employment requirements:

  • A master’s degree in informatics, Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or a related field.

Essential are:

  • Profound experience in programming in C, debugging source code written in C and compiling and running software on a high-performance computing cluster.
  • Ability to collaborate with researchers from different disciplines, at University of Augsburg and at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.
  • Fluency in version control management, preferably using Git.
  • A demonstration of scientific innovation and creativity and the ability and willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary research team, also with external researchers.

Optional is:

  • Familiarity in scientific modeling.
  • Experience in preparing model input data and post-processing of simulation results with R.

The required qualifications must already be proven in the application documents by appropriate certificates.
