The international research-based Master's degree programme “Urban Cultures” (URC) is addressed to students with an interest in urban cultural studies, striving to acquire transdisciplinary competencies regarding European and Latin-American cities and urban regions. In addition to the study of respective urban theories and practices, the master’s curriculum concentrates on the importance of the arts and culture for sustainable and inclusive urban planning and management, taking into consideration not only urban governance and policy measures but also the constituent role of urban imaginaries and aesthetics for urban identities and creation processes.

  1. Proof of an above-average first professionally qualifying domestic or foreign degree in geography, literature and cultural studies, ethnology, sociology, history, political science, urban studies, architecture or similar; an above-average degree is given if the applicant is among the best 50 percent of the graduates of the respective examination year with the overall grade achieved on the basis of the examination regulations; proof is provided by a confirmation from the responsible examination authority. This proof is deemed to have been provided if the overall grade is 2.5 or better.

    Applicants who have not yet completed a degree but have achieved at least 140 credit points will be admitted to the Master's degree programme Urban Cultures if the other requirements are met and under the resolutory condition that they provide proof of above-average completion of a degree course by the end of the semester following their first enrolment in the Master's degree programme in Urban Cultures. The application must be accompanied by proof of the examination results achieved in this degree program, the average grade achieved, the number of credit points included in the calculation of the average grade and the number of credit points required to complete the corresponding degree program (Transcript of Records). Students at the University of Augsburg should apply for the average grade certificate in good time by e-mailing ssc@zv.uni-augsburg.de to the Student Information Office. You will be notified via your student e-mail address (accessible with your RZ ID and RZ password via https://webmail.uni-augsburg.de/) as soon as the certificate can be collected.
     
  2. Proof of language skills: English, Spanish and/or Portuguese language and specialist language skills at least at level C 1 CEFR.
    The required language skills are deemed to be proven, among other things, if a degree as per no. 1 is available with a linguistic or philological component in the respective language to the extent of at least one minor subject with 60 LP or if a degree from a university in the respective language area is available.
