The most hyped digital tools of the past decade use artificial neural networks or blockchain technology, which have increased the need for computational processing power significantly. With the increased uptake of these tools, energy usage also rises. Although both AI and blockchain systems (like cryptocurrency and NFTs) have been heralded by the tech industry as ways to democratize exchange and production, their impact on energy use has drawn criticism from those concerned with climate change. Artists are often some of the first to experiment with new technologies and media as they arise, and AI and blockchain are no exception. However, digital artists have faced ethical quandaries in using these technologies, given that they contribute to the threat of climate change. This talk addresses contemporary art practices that both use and critique these technologies in relation to the climate crisis. Art practitioners are in a unique position to leverage practice-based knowledge in highlighting the fraught ethical stakes in the use of technology today.
